What is a calorie deficit?

A calorie deficit means taking in less energy than your body uses over a period of time. The opposite is a surplus. The Deficit helps put those two sides—food intake and energy expenditure—next to each other.
Calories in, energy out
Food and drinks contribute to intake. Your body uses energy at rest and during activity. The app displays the resting and active energy available through Apple Health, alongside recorded intake. Wearable energy values and food entries are estimates, not exact measurements.
Look at a period, not only one day
A single day is a small part of the picture. The overview lets you choose a period and see recorded intake, expenditure and balance together. Missing food records can make a day look like a much larger deficit than it really was, so the app includes configurable minimums for counting days.
Why estimated weight change is not a prediction
The relationship between energy balance and weight change is not a fixed daily formula. Water, changing activity and the body’s responses affect the scale. The app’s energy-based weight-change figure is a rough illustration, not a guaranteed outcome or a prescribed target.
Choose the logging method you can use
You can enter food manually, dictate it, photograph a label or use a meal photo as an estimate. You can also keep an external tracker that writes nutrition to Apple Health and use The Deficit for the overview.
